Rhyming Verse

This year has been really cool
At Somerville Intermediate school
In the beginning we were only eleven
And now we're near the end of year seven

In Term two we went to camp

Highropes, archery and sailing
The trickiest was the rockclimbing
But everyone kept on going instead of failing

Paparoa held the e-learning conference
We got to teach them about different applications
It was so very successful
The year sixes even got to roatate to different stations

The year has been so wonderful
We'll soon be big year eights
I always remember my year seven experience
And I'll definiteley miss all my classmates

The Roman Colosseum

The Roman Colosseum is an amphitheatre in the centre of Rome. Its construction started between 70 and 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD by Vespasian and his son Titus. When Vespasian became the new roman emperor, he wanted to show everyone that he cared about the people and not live luxuriously as Nero had. He even tore down most of Nero’s golden house and turned it into a public park. He was a pretty generous emperor.

The Colosseum is capable of seating 50,000 spectators. It was used for animal hunts, re-enactments of famous battles and dramas based on classical mythology.

Below the wooden arena floors of the Colosseum, were sets of rooms and secret passageways for wild beasts. Executions were another thing that was held in the arena. Sometimes the person had to fight with wild beasts, such as lions, and if the person was lucky enough to survive, they would make the person fight another beast the next day, until he or she would die, but they weren’t executing the people for entertainment, some of them had done some serious crime.

The height of each floor is 32 to 42 metres. The total height of the entire structure is 144 metres. The Roman Colosseum had 76 entrances and an extra 4 entrances for emperors, nobles and gladiators. There were tall nets along side the Colosseum to protect the spectators and, the arena of the Colosseum was made up of wood and sand.

The Colosseum was built in Nero’s park near the giant statue of Colossus. In 847, the southern side of the Colosseum was destroyed by an earthquake. Parts of the building including the marble facade were used for the construction of later monuments, including the
St. Peter's Basilica.

The floors of the Colosseum have now been removed so that tourist can see the rooms in the basement, where the Romans kept the animals and equipment for the fights, and the chairs were stolen because they were marble and, people burned them to make mortar and cement.

The Roman Colosseum is considered the most impressive building in the Roman Empire, and attracts many tourists to Italy.

Riddles

1. What is deaf, dumb, and blind and always tells the truth?
2. What goes round the house and in the house but never touches the house?
3. What comes once in a minute, twice in a moment, but never in a thousand years?
4. What goes into the water black and comes out red?
5. Lives without a body, speaks without a mouth, to which the air alone gives birth.
6. What fastens two people yet touches only one?
7. As I went across the bridge, I met a man with a load of wood which was neither straight nor crooked. What kind of wood was it?
8. I have a little house in which I live all alone. It has no doors or windows, and if I want to go out I must break through the wall.
9. I am taken from a mine, and shut up in a wooden case, from which I am never released, and yet I am used by almost everybody.
10. Poke your fingers in my eyes and I will open wide my jaws. Linen cloth, quills, or paper, my greedy lust devours them all.

Recipe

This is a recipe that's simple and great for whenever you feel like an icy sweet treat on a hot day.

Yoghurt Pops

Ingredients

2c Yoghurt
1c Frozen Berries
Disposable cups
Ice block sticks

Method

1. Put the yoghurt and the berries in the blender and give them a quick whizz (It’s ok if the berries are chunky- you just want to mix everything together)
2. Pour the mixture into paper or plastic cups
3. Cover with tinfoil and poke an icecream stick in the top (This helps hold the stick in the middle until it freezes)
4. Place them carefully into the freezer and leave to freeze for at least a day

Enjoy!

Who killed the Electric car?

What problems does the use of the electric car solve?
The electric car solves the problem of not having to use gas because it makes our air polluted and you can go home to charge it instead of going to the petrol station. Cars that use gas also create fumes that cause global warming.

Who will benefit from the electric car?
Mostly people who don't want to spend money on gas or want fast quiet cars that help prevent global warming.

What problems are caused by the electric car?
Some people would like bigger cars and only looked at the price and features instead of looking at them as enviro-friendly cars, plus they were more expensive than cars that use fuel.

Review
Who killed the electric car is a documentary about the inventors and how they were helpful. In 1996 the electric car was invented to help solve some problems in countries like California. The biggest problem was that the fumes coming out of the cars using gas was polluting the air which meant some children weren't even allowed to go outside to play. Some people aged between 15-20 years old had lung disease caused by the cars we use today. The electric car is fast, quiet and you can plug it in at night and then take it out in when you want to drive it but some people still didn't want the electric car because they didn't know anything about it and it was more expensive than normal cars. The goverment was against electric cars and it got taken down because it could only be used by 90% of the population. The goverment also made a new hydrogen type of their own and crushed all the EV1's. The people who had already bought the electric cars had to give them back or be charged with robbery. Alot of people got really mad because they didn't know why it was taken off the road. The electric car was fast, quiet, environmentally friendly and easier to use, and I think they should have never been taken off the road.

Camp Motutapu

On the 3rd of May, syndicate D and Room 28 met at Half Moon Bay marina to go to Motutapu Island for a week. We went to Moec camp and it took us 1 hour and 30 minutes to walk from Rangitoto Island to our camp.

Firstly, we found out which dorms we were in, and got straight on to our first activity which was sailing. I was partners with Kim and Ally and one person was working the tiller and the other was working the main sheet. It was quite hard to sail the boat and I was freezing.

Straight after, we had raft building and we were competing against Group A. When we finished building our raft, we had to carry it down to the beach and everyone had to get on and start paddling. Everyone stayed on our raft longer than the other team, so we won!

The next day, my first activity was rock climbing and I only completed the first one, which was called The Slab. There were four walls there but no one did the fourth one.

After morning tea, we had the Confidence Course and we had four things to do, two balance beams, one where you had to go up hill with three boards and going through a net without touching it which was really fun.

Next, we had kayaking, which was very tiring and we played canoe soccer, which was exactly like soccer but we used our hands to move the ball around and the goal was the instructors kayak.

Our last activity for Tuesday was high ropes, at first I was really scared but it was actually really fun and not that high once you get up there. The net was fun too but really tiring and Kim timed me, and I took 3 minutes.

The next day, after breakfast our group started the gun walk. We had to watch a video first about the guns in war, and then we walked around to look at the army bases and dark tunnels

After that, we had archery and it was my favourite activity even though I only scored four. Troll showed us how to use the bows and arrows and then we started.

Straight after lunch, we had survivor, and we had to go through a lot of obstacles like the tires, which made me very muddy and disgusting. We were team red and we got to our flag first, so we won!

Next, we had orienteering which was a bit uncomfortable because we couldn’t take a shower after survivor to wash the mud off. I was partners with Kim and we found eight out of twelve things in the treasure hunt.

We had electives today and my first elective was Frisbee golf. We had to walk up a hill and try to hit the next pole until, we got to the end.

After Frisbee golf, I had beach bum, which was basically doing whatever you wanted to do on the beach. Me, Kim and Krishna built a sand turtle and played in the water.

Lastly, we had a movie and we watched Ratatouille. I had already watched it but it was still pretty cool. The movie took two hours and I felt really sleepy when the movie finished.

Finally, it was Friday, and we had breakfast and then took all our luggage out to the basketball courts. We had to clean our dorms and then we started the walk which was six kilometres and it took one and a half hours. We got onto the ferry and headed back to Half Moon Bay marina.

I was really glad to be back home to see my family, take longer showers and be in my own bed. I was really tired after camp but I thought it was really fun and I’m really happy that I tried everything even though I was a little nervous about some things.

Cellphones

Cellphones are portable communication devices. In the beginning they were known as mobile rigs and were used in vehicles and ambulances. Cellphones are also known as two-way radios.

The first rig installed was in 1910, in Mr Ericsson’s car. You could not dial your phone in the car, you had to stop at a place where a phone line was accessible. Mr Ericsson’s phone was first released in Sweden in 1956. Cellphones have improved a lot over the years and now you can call anyone at anytime or place.

Now most people have cellphones and you can also listen to music, take pictures and play games on them as well. We are very lucky that we can use cellphones for a lot of things and not have to stop at a place where phone lines are accessible.
